Watches For Men - The Classiest Status Symbol

Watches For Men
The most enduring and acceptable piece of jewelry for males is the simple watch. Even in the liberal days of the 21st century, many people still think it odd when a man is wearing an earring or an ostentatious bracelet, but nobody will bat an eyelid at a man wearing an expensive, even showy, watch.
Watches for men come in all shapes and sizes, with prices ranging from the extremely reasonable to the utterly stupid.
It's not often that a man has to accessorize, but he can if he owns more than one watch. The sheer range of watches available is staggering, and the best way to know what to buy is to know why you want it.
Timekeeping
Without being able to accurately tell you what time it is, a watch is a total waste of time. No matter how many other functions it fulfills, its primary job is to tell the time.
There are also so many ways of telling the time
- Digital Watches with an easy and straightforward, here's the time
- The traditional numbered watch face with hands, which you think would be old fashioned, but it's still the favored style of watch. By far.
- Speaking watches, for the extremely lazy or perhaps visually impaired, it's not difficult to get a hold of a watch that will announce the time in a choice of voices to suit you.
- I've even seen a sun-dial watch. Useless at night, I'm guessing this was merely a gimmick
Prestige and Status
The amount of status a watch brings is in direct proportion to its value, rarity and cool quotient.
Nobody is going to be impressed by an 80's digital watch apart from someone who likes retro gear, so many more types of watch will impress people than you may imagine.
Value is an easy thing to measure. How much did it cost new? How much would it sell for now? How pure is the gold or other metal, how heavy the gemstones and how famous the designer.
Rarity is harder to pick out for a non-expert. Simply put, mass produced watches just won't be as cool as hand crafted specimens. A unique item will always be worth more and be worth more prestige to its owner than 1 with a thousand counterparts.
Cool quotient is how popular a brand is. For example if a famous gangsta rapper wore a specific brand of watch, thousands of wannabees all over the world would wear a similar watch, and be admired by their peers for owning it.
Generall, people just combine all three in one fell swoop by purchasing something like a Baume and Mercier watch. Slightly expensive, cool and relatively uncommon.
Display of Wealth
Not everyone has a spare 40k for a Rolex, so you don't see many of them around, but what you do see are the examples of watchmakers that don't have to financially cripple you to make sure you have a great watch. Names like Baume and Mercier Riviera and Invicta mean that you can have something that makes you look wealthy while not having two pennies to rub together.
Have you ever noticed that the more expensive a watch gets the bigger and chunkier it gets?
Ostentation. What's the point in having a beautiful and pricey watch if nobody sees it or comments on it? As we have seen, there isn't a lot of point of going to that much effort and expense for no reason. If you were going to hide your watch away you may as well wear a 5 buck plastic digital watch you bought from a yard sale.
Fashion
Whatever reason you have for buying a watch, make sure it suits you. Buying a super-classy and costly unit and wearing a t-shirt and sweat pants all day won't bring out the best in your purchase.
The right combination will bring you attention from women, admiration from men and a great deal of self belief and pride.

Nice and interesting hub. We women have our clothes, jewelry and accessories, but for guys, a really nice and classy watch is one of the ultimate fashion piece for men. My husband knew what he wanted and saved up for it, a Rolex Submariner. He's been wearing it for 15 years now, he won't wear any other watch and there's no point in getting him a new one. It's a dive watch so it works for him in casual wear and since it's a Rolex, it still looks good and classy on him even if he's in a suit. And you're right Melvolio, a proper watch will draw a woman's attention.
Thanks Peter. I must agree Moira, if you find a watch you love, there's no reason to get another, especially if it meets more than 1 need, ie casual AND formal.
